Hurricane Irma and Maria

Hurricane Irma devastated the island of St Maarten on September 6, 2017, and unfortunately, The Horny Toad was not spared her wrath.

We lost the roof and complete second floor structure, with extensive damage to unit 5 on the lower level. The only 2 units that were partially spared were units 6 and 7 but the rain from Irma and later from Maria a few days later caused extensive water damage and mold to these two units.

After much soul searching, and advice from a structural engineer, we decided that the wisest choice would be to demolish what remained and rebuild a completely new “Main House”

We hired an architect, IXI Design, and spent many hours working on the new design to optimize the space available and also to create new unique units all with ocean views. After the devastation caused by Irma to the many wood framed structures on the island, the decision was also made to construct the new building totally out of reinforced concrete. We chose Vascon Engineering for the structural design.

Our goal is to be open late October, a very aggressive schedule, especially with the amount of ongoing construction all over the Island. We will keep updating our progress on this website.

So, while the new building will have very many differences from the old one, we feel the essence of “The Toad” will remain, as that is truly a reflection of the guests who keep coming back year after year.
